Over the past few years, I’ve learned a lot at OPP. I learned the value of time and how to be punctual. I’ve learned a lot about myself and that I’m a hands on learner. Doing lawn care and snow removal with the Youth Service Corps, I learned how to use a snow blower and how to operate different equipment. Now, because I learned that skill, I help out at home. It’s given me confidence. I know that I am reliable and hardworking. I take pride in my job and honestly, it’s fun. I love working with OPP. I tell all of my friends about OPP. It’s the best place to be!

Big things are happening at OPP today! 🌟 We were thrilled to welcome Mayor Arunan Arulampalam (@mayorarunan) and Congressman John Larson for a special check presentation as they officially awarded OPP with a $550,000 investment in our young people! This is such incredible momentum as we head into the 10th year of our Hartford Youth Service Corps, which has already seen $10 million in community impact over the last decade.
We want to extend a huge thank you to Congressman John Larson and his dedicated staff for their hard work in garnering this generous award, as well as to all of our supporters who continue to bolster our youth every day! During the check presentation, Mayor Arulampalam spoke about the heart of this work, highlighting how our members support the city by helping elderly residents with snow removal and emphasizing that these kids are our future. Congressman Larson also shared a strong message on how public service supports the whole community, seeing our members as the future carpenters and tradespeople who will lead Connecticut forward. This $550k is going to be put to great use immediately as we continue building these paths to success together!

Students were able to learn how to make a business plan for themselves. Thank you HEDCO for stopping by and collaborating with us on educating our community about entrepreneurship as part of our financial literacy program.

The central mission of Our Piece of the Pie is to empower young people to succeed. Part of that success stems from learning how to build a strong foundation at school. This OPP student exemplifies the power of developing a positive relationship with school, as they write about how lucky they are to have the privilege of going to school.
